2A – Punctuation in the letters is not great, so I may have taken liberties in that area to have the letters flow better, and make sense. Mostly, I have left the punctuation and spelling as is.

5A – Letter dated December 17, 1897: Dear Caleb, I suppose you think it strange that I have not written you before in answer to your letters of quite a remote date. I ought to have written you before.

Was so delighted to hear of Gordie’s great achievement in his classes. I have read that part of your letter to several. Eddie’s among the rest who said he never heard of such a case before. Please give him my congratulations on his success. Eddie Lance here last Saturday night and remained till Wednesday when he went to Halifax and Windsor but said he might come back here on Saturday evening train to Centreville and return home Monday.

Your Mother and I have an invitation to spend Christmas at your uncle Isaiah’s in Middleton and your Mother is very anxious to go, so if all is well we hope to get away on Saturday am. Christmas day. If you were only a little nearer here I would borrow your over coat and fur cap to wear down but the roads are so bad I could not hope to get there now. I have a heavy fur coat but it is too heavy to wear on train and my cloth one is pretty well worn out but must make it answer.

Wish you could come over Sunday next while Eddie is here.

Your Mother is quite well now but cannot endure any fatigue. Do you get any letters _____ _____? I do not. Have had no letters from him for about six months past.

Hope Philip is better, but anxious about him, and do hope he will quit that very dangerous play. Excuse paper.

With love from your Mother and Cassie and loving father, Wm C. Bill

12a – Letter dated May 8th, 1899 – Dear Caleb, I was so sorry not to see you last evening. I returned not long after you left here. It seemed so hard for you as well as for me that I had to leave home, only see you a few minutes, after you taking so much trouble to come home to see me. I feel so badly about it, and then Earl and Paul must have had a pretty lonely time of it and I am afraid they will not want to come and see me anymore. When I got home last night I felt so bad about the whole matter as you had gone and more – I did not half thank you for that lovely and large supply of canned and other things you brought me. I am going to use some today for my dinner. I don’t _____ much _____ _____ _____, and you always seem to know just what my appetite craves. Thank you so very much. Wish I had had something for you in return.

When I got to Cold Brook yesterday I found on my desk in the hall a large quantity of flowers, and the people all seemed to be so pleased to see me again. It was so very _____ and I assure you it did me good to receive such an expression of kindness.

There are places where I never hear a word of kindness or scarcely an expression of appreciation returned from one year to another. Perhaps I feel this more now than I formerly did.

Please Caleb do not forget to hand my glasses to Mr. Howard Pineo.

With much love – your affectionate father Wm C. Bill
