Photo Album #32 – Eaton/Schafheitlin

“If you share information from this site, I only ask that you reference this site as your source, when sharing that information. (Examples: Photos for family reunions, genealogy sites, etc). Permission would be needed for anything other than personal use, such as publishing in a document.”

There are three photo albums for #32. I believe the albums belonged to Betty (Schafheitlin) Eaton and Vernon H. Eaton.

These items were obtained at an auction in Nova Scotia, a number of years ago. There were numerous items from the estate of Betty (Elizabeth) (Schafheitlin) Eaton at this auction. Her father was Otto Schafheiltin and her mother was Margery Blake, from Massachusetts. The first album would appear to be of the Blake family in Massachusetts, around the turn of the century. The second album belonged to Betty’s brother, Donald Schafheitlin, and the third album is of Betty and Vernon Eaton.

The album I am posting first is the second one – Donald Schafheitlin’s. It is approximately 13″ x 10 1/2″ x 2″. Some photos are glued in, others are in corner mounts. The photos are in the order they appear in the album. Right now it is the month of November and I really wanted to have the album completed so I could post it around Remembrance Day as it is a reminder of what that day stands for and the sacrifices made.

1954 article from The New York Times.

Album #2 is a smaller album, measuring just 7″ x 5 1/2″. I believe it is of Margery Blake’s family. The pictures would appear to be from the New England states. The photos are glued in, some more solidly than others. I was able to remove a few photos that had writing on the back.

Photo album belonging to Margery Blake.

Photo #269

This is a loose sheet that has photos of siblings Margery Blake, Dorothy Blake, Harrison Gray Blake, Clarence Dodge Blake and Rodney Norton Blake.

Harrison Gray Blake b. Jan. 26, 1864 in Woburn, Massachusetts, married Lizzie Batchelder Dodge b. Dec. 1865, also in Massachusetts. Their children were: Dorothy Blake b. 1891; Margery Blake b. 1893; Harrison Gray Blake b. 1901; Clarence Dodge Blake b. 1904; and Rodney Norton Blake b. 1907.

Research: Alfred “Blake” Eaton.

Photo #358

Caption: Written on the back: “Grandmother & Grandpa Albert”

Research: I believe this to be Albert Edward Eaton and Emily Charlotte (Lockwood) Eaton. They were the grandparents of Vernon Hugh Eaton, husband of Betty (Schafheitlin) Eaton. Vernon’s parents were Hugh Hamilton Eaton and Emma Florence Eaton. Emma was the daughter of Albert and Emily Eaton.

Photo #358A

This cabinet card was not among the items with the Eaton/Schafheitlin photos.

Caption: Written on back: “Albert Eaton, wife, Winnifred, Warren, Ross, Gertrude”

When working on posting items, they are usually done in draft form first, before publishing. Most of the research is carried out at the time of drafting. How fortunate that I was researching Photo #358 when I chanced upon the above cabinet card for sale! The photo would have been taken around 1891 as Gertrude, the youngest in the photo, was born in November of 1890. They had three more children with Emma Florence being the youngest, the mother of Vernon Eaton.

Caption: Written on back: “Auntie Clarkson, Truro (brought up Marjorie Annand)”

Research: Thank you to Tom Annand for providing the following information! : “Auntie Clarkson was Florence (nee McCully) Clarkson. She was my grandmother’s aunt. Her husband died after the birth of their son (who also passed away as an infant) after which she returned to Truro and lived with her parents William & Martha McCully; he was the postmaster and after his death she took over much of his work at the P.O. She helped raise my grandmother Marjorie, who was sent back to Truro after her mother died in childbirth. Florence lived the rest of her life with my grandparents as a kind of nanny/housekeeper.”

Research: Marriage of Elizabeth (Betty) Schafheitlin to Vernon Hugh Eaton on July 28, 1956. Reception for 125 held at Lyndhurst Farm, Canning, Nova Scotia.

There are more photos in the album but there may be people living, who are in the photos.

Part of the Eaton items I obtained at this auction, included two scrapbooks full of articles of the Royal family, which are quite interesting.
