When I read Jean’s description for this photo, I was taken aback when she mentioned that Miss McCunn (1877 – 1957) was a retired missionary. A couple of years before obtaining this album, I had picked up a journal in an antiques store in Colchester County N.S. The journal ranged in dates from 1890 to 1906. Part of the journal is recorded in Trinidad. The journal belonged to a young missionary woman named Bessie McCunn. There is no doubt in my mind that the young woman who owned the journal I have, is none other than the Bessie McCunn in this picture, who became a friend of Matilda Chalmers! Bessie’s journal is one that I hope to publish on this site sometime in the future!

Research: Sarah Lillian Clark, daughter of George H. Clark and Jessie A. Whidden. Sarah married Walter Rose.
Photo #182 Caption: Written on back: “To Mrs. Whidden. I have not a good snap of me alone – but as four of us are related to you this one will be all right. Front row right – my sister; back of her Ellen Cameron on her 96th birthday, beside her on right of picture with checked front, Mrs. Walter MacDonald _ Miss Cameron’s niece; behind her yours truly – Ada S. MacD. All descendants of Duncan Cameron & Annabel MacDonald” “May 57” on side of photo.

Photo #187 Caption: Written on back: “Uncle David Whidden”
Research: I believe this is John Warren Whidden’s uncle, David Whidden (1851 – about 1923) married to Christina Ann Kirk (1854 -1887).
Photo #188 Caption: Written on front: “Painted by Martha Swan Age 84 years”
Research: This photo is the back of a painting. A couple of photos in the album mention Norman Swan, whom I believe to be Norman Douglas Swan (b. 1895 in Central New Annan – 1985). He had an Aunt Martha Ann Swan (b. in New Annan 1874 – 1964). Could this possibly be her?
Update: I have heard back from an individual who was able to compare this photo with a photo of Norman’s Aunt, Martha Ann Swan. Unfortunately, looks like it is not her. However, Martha Ann Swan did paint, so it is possible she did the painting.

Photo #190 Some photos of the ephemera that came with the albums.
An obituary notice for Grace Marie (Chalmers) Whidden.
Photo #191
Research: The obituary for a John Grace has John Whidden as a pall bearer.
Photo #192 There is a date of Oct. 10th, at the top, but no year. A bit of the reverse side seems to be dealing with ration cards during the war. I would guess this would be the early forties.
Research: Very interesting find for me! The article is written by D.S.G. I believe this to be my grandfather, Daniel Steele Giddens, of Londonderry Station. It also mentions my uncle, Keith Giddens, son of Daniel Steele.
I can see why it is in the Whidden items, as there is mention of a Johnnie Whidden.
Photo #193 Some of the ephemera mentioning Norman Douglas Swan.
Photo #194 Ephemera mentioning David Whidden (1877 – 1950), whom I believe to be the cousin of John W. Whidden based on the paperwork death date of October 31, 1950.
